'Worm What to Do – Weekly - Check food consumption – this will only take a minute, but it makes a huge difference. Often, worms are overfed, which leads to the excess food fermenting and heating up the entire system. This creates an unpleasant environment for the worms, so monitor their food intake - Feed smaller – worms prefer their food stuffs to be in smaller, manageable pieces, so ensure veggies are chopped, eggshells crushed and food not laid too deep on the top of the farm - Browns after greens – for every bucket of green material given to the worms, there should be at least one bucket of brown (carbon) material applied. It could be dry leaves, newspapers, straw mulches….even pizza boxes, just make sure there is at least 50% brown to green Worm What to Do – Every 6 Months - Temperature check – worms don’t like it too cold, or too hot. - When winter hits, if the worms are chilly, they will slow right down, so consider relocating the worm farm somewhere warmer for the winter. In summer, an overheated worm farm can kill worms very quickly, so it’s important to put the farm in a cool, shady spot. In warmer weather, worms also appreciate a wet hessian bag over the top of the farm to provide a bit of air con and regulate internal temperatures. Worm What to Do – Every Year - Check your brood – this is a yearly health and wellbeing check for your backyard babies. Dig down into the worm farm and check that the worms are active, healthy, happy and abundant. This is a sign that everything is humming along, and your worms are thriving.
