'© FAO: http://www.fao.org In order to overcome constant battle against drought, floods, pests, diseases and lack of access to markets, and thanks to the funding provided by the European Union, FAO implemented a multifaceted project called SOMASEED that has improved farmers’ skills and ability to cope with adverse conditions. Somaseed has improved seed varieties as well as worked towards preserving endangered local seeds that farmers have been selecting over millennia. With the help of multiple partners like various Ministries of Agriculture in Somalia, a local NGO called SADO and International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), FAO started working on seven districts to help tens of thousands of people using the SOMASEED project. The project helped to revive farmer seed including preserving endangered indigenous seeds.
