'Small Island Developing States or SIDS share similar development challenges such as Susceptibility to natural disasters Vulnerability to external shocks Lack of infrastructure Dependency on imported processed foods High prevalence of diet-related diseases The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these challenges, making the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 even more complicated for SIDS. Urgent action is needed to help SIDS recover from the impact of the pandemic, and to develop stronger and more sustainable agri-food systems. Digitalization is having a positive impact on our economies and societies. If shared equitably among SIDS, it can help transform agriculture and agri-food systems, providing livelihood opportunities for the most vulnerable, including women and youth. 1 Greater uptake of digitalization is bringing people and markets closer together in outer islands by improving connectivity. 2 Innovative digital applications for food e-commerce and farming advisory services are emerging in the Pacific Islands. 3 UN agencies are working with partners in the Pacific to improve infrastructure and agri-food systems value chains. These are only some examples of what can be done. Only by working together, we can achieve sustainable agri-food systems transformation in the SIDS.
