'COVID-19 undermines efforts to end extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition. We risk exacerbating economic slowdowns and recessions already present in recent years. The world economy is expected to lose 11 trillion USD over 2020-2021 and up to 28 trillion USD over 2020-2025. Before COVID-19, more than 3 billion people were already unable to afford healthy diets. This figure could increase by 17%. Stimulus fiscal spending has reached unprecedented levels. Many countries lack the tools to deploy such economic stimulus measures. Now is the time for countries to implement “smarter” macroeconomic stimulus packages. Agri-food system transformation to achieve healthy diets must feature prominently in macroeconomic stimulus packages. Governments have an important role to play in prioritizing affordable healthy diets. Food supply chains must keep functioning, while promoting nutrition-sensitive value chains.Trade policies should enable agri-food systems transformation.
